THE SUMMER OF MIRACLES
Make miracles happen for kids at Duke Children’s by donating at your local participating store while running errands! Currently, Walmart & Sam’s Club, Publix, and Dairy Queen are all in the middle of their fundraising efforts for Duke Children’s. Make sure to donate to support Duke Children’s the next time you visit any of these stores!
OVER THE EDGE
Our fifth Over the Edge event, and our first one held on the Duke Medical Campus, was an enormous success! On June 7, over 60 participants rappelled 11 stories down the side of Duke Central Tower, the inpatient home for Duke Children’s. $103,838 was raised for clinical care, pediatric research, and provider education. Thank you to all our participants and sponsors for making this event a success! Click below to see incredible photos from the day.
FEATURED FUNDRAISER: THE MIRACLE MILEY RESEARCH FUND
Miley Kathryn Byrd was born at Duke University Hospital in July of 2022. A heart warrior, Miley was diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome and underwent multiple operations and long hospital stays. In February of 2024, Miley was admitted to Duke with heart failure. Despite excellent care and being listed for a heart transplant, she passed away that May.
Miley's family and friends have started a research fund in memory of Miley and her courageous spirit. It is their hope to raise significant funds for single ventricle research at Duke University, in the hopes of helping researchers and providers find solutions to many of the issues single ventricle heart patients face.
CHAMPION AMBASSADORS HIGHLIGHT
Macon’s Story
Macon, a 2024-2025 Duke Children’s Champion Ambassador, has been a Duke Children’s patient since he was born with bi-lateral club feet. When he was three, his father was diagnosed with Loeys-Dietz type 4, a rare connective tissue disorder that runs in families. Soon after, Macon was diagnosed as well. Macon sees multiple Duke Children’s specialists to manage his condition. He has his own annual fundraiser, Macon’Smiles, through which he raises money to purchase emotional and social care supplies to support kids at Duke.
Violet’s Story
Violet, a 2024-2025 Duke Children’s Champion Ambassador, was born in China with a cleft lip and palate. Her parents came to Duke after seeing photos from the adoption agency, and once they brought Violet home when she was 17 months old, she began her journey with the Duke Cleft & Craniofacial Clinic. When she was nine, Violet came to her annual clinic day with a book she had written and illustrated that told the story of a clinic visit. The team helped Violet publish the book, and now every child who comes to clinic receives a copy.
